GERMAN I

1 credit

The German I course will introduce students to the language, culture, and customs of German speaking countries.  Students will develop an ability to communicate on a beginning level in German in a variety of situations, such as:  giving directions, free time activities, food; etc. 

 

GERMAN II

1 credit

Prerequisite German I

This further develops the basic skills of speaking, listening, writing, and reading learned in German 1.  The German video series Fokus Deutsch and its accompanying material are used to give the students an authentic picture of the German-speaking culture.  This class will be taught in German whenever practical and the students will participate in interactive activities aimed at enhancing their language skills.  The format of this class is often interactive, and priority is placed on student participation through communicative activities.  

 

GERMAN III

1 credit

Prerequisite German II

Auf Deutsch! immerses students in authentic German language and current culture, and is keyed to the Fokus Deutsch video series, which captivates students' attention with a storyline that continues over the first two levels of the program. German III offers cultural, historical, and personal perspectives on several themes of interest.

 

PSYCHOLOGY

 

Psychology

Have you ever wondered why people behave the way they do?  How is it that someone ends up in prison?  Why is your brother so much different than you?  This course provides insight and a better understanding of our own behavior. Topics to be examined include, but are not limited to, conditioning, memory, problem solving, motivation and emotion, body and behavior, altered states of consciousness, sensations and perception, development, personality theory, psychological disorders, and therapy along with social psychology.

 

HEALTH

Required

This course is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of all important health issues. It helps by directing teens toward making wise choices. The textbook, Total Health by Susan Boe, is Biblically-based and scientifically-sound and focuses on knowledge, as well as skills in goal setting, coping, communicating, and decision-making.  Topics covered in this course are physical, mental, and social health, as well as how our spiritual health affects all aspects of our lives.

 

Language Arts

 

FRESHMAN LITERATURE

1 credit

Required

Students will be introduced to several works in literature.  Students learn to identify and respond in writing, character, theme, point of view, setting, and plot.  Independent reading is encouraged and required both semesters and students learn to prepare both oral and written book reports.  Books read will include, but not be limited to To Kill a Mockingbird, The Miracle Worker, and Romeo and Juliet.

 

SOPHOMORE LITERATURE

1 credit

Required

Students will learn to recognize mood, tone, stereotype, satire, irony, symbol, imagery, and figurative language.  They will also study poetic devices such as alliteration, rhythm, rhyme scheme, and sound devices.  Books read will include, but not be limited to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Julius Caesar, and The Princess Bride

 

AMERICAN LITERATURE

1 credit

The class provides an overview of American literature from 1490 to the late 1950’s Reading and discussing novels, poems, plays, and essays written by America’s outstanding authors will enable the students to gain an awareness of their cultural heritage as Americans. Students will discover the relationship between the literature and American history. Research techniques will be employed and reinforced.  Novels and stories read include, but are not limited to The Crucible, “Self-Reliance”, and The Great Gatsby

 

BRITISH LITERATURE

1 credit

This course focuses on British Literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present time.  Students will be asked to read and respond, in a variety of formats, to the literature with which they are interacting.  They will be given a broad overview of the historical development of British Literature with an emphasis on increasing reading, writing, and language skills integrated throughout all units of study. The study of British Literature will include, but will not be limited to Beowulf, Macbeth, Gulliver’s Travels, A Tale of Two Cities, & Screwtape Letters.

 

ENGLISH COMPOSITION

1 credit

Required

Writing is treated as a process, using paragraphs as a springboard. This required course reinforces the basic writing skills of usage, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation. Students write descriptive narrative and expository paragraphs and longer papers based on models, research, personal experience, and imagination.
